A Royal Priesthood

PrintE-mail

READ:

1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Exodus 19:6

6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

EXHORTATION:

I

t is another privilege of the Christians with an Old Testament parallel. Peter’s idea of royal priesthood is drawn from Exodus 19:6, where God said of Israel, "And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests." However Israel forfeited its privilege offered to it. When Israel apostatised and executed their Messiah, they lose the privilege of being a kingdom of priests. Peter affirms that at present the church is the royal priesthood of God.

We not only serve the King as His priests, but also reign with Him. The Greek word for ‘royal’ (Basileios) can refer to a royal palace, sovereignty, crown, or monarchy. Here the idea is royalty in general - a sphere of dominion. When we compare this thought with the teaching of verse 5, we see an interesting concept of the church. In verse 5, Peter called the church, a spiritual house. In that verse he also addressed the believers as ‘holy priesthood.’ The Spiritual house where our priesthood is administered is a royal house. Therefore we can say church is a royal house of priests.

This squares up with other New Testament passages. Let us take note that the church is God’s kingdom on earth. But the absolute realisation of His sovereign dominion in our midst is still in the future. That is when we will also finally realise the fullness of the privilege of royal priesthood.

In the book of Revelation thrice we are told that we shall reign with our Lord. In Revelation 1:6 we read, "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." Revelation 5:10 says, "And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth" Revelation 20:6b reaffirms, "they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."

If you are a Christian, you will spend eternity giving offerings to the Lord God and reigning with Christ. You will have dominion over whatever things God assigns to you. You will even rule over the angels - "Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?. . . Know ye not that we shall judge angels?" (1 Corinthians 6: 1-3).

THOUGHT:

"Christ has many joint-heirs, but no successors."

PRAYER:

Thank you Lord for transferring me from the bondage of Satan to Thy Kingdom to serve and to rule with you.
