Exhortation-English - 2016

Pastor’s Letter

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 03 July 2016

Beloved brethren,

It has been 17 days since my family has been away from Gethsemane and Singapore. My wife Carolyn and I had just returned from India (Friday, 1st July at 10.30am) after spending that many days with my ageing parents. (My children are still with their grandparents, and will return only on 13th July). We also had a wonderful opportunity to get together with the families of my two siblings for the first time. Since I started serving in Gethsemane in 1991, I did not have an opportunity like this to be with my parents, siblings and their families together. So it was indeed an edifying and joyful family get-together...

A Mutually Caring Church

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 26 June 2016

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms” (James 5:13).

In a local congregation of believers, a variety of experiences may be found at a given time. While some people experience severe afflictions, others are presented with reasons for jubilation. It is also true that all alike are subject to afflictions and happiness. Both those types of experiences can be in different persons or in the same persons at the same time. And sometimes, change from one extreme to the other can happen suddenly.

Testimonies of Church Camp 2016

Sunday, 19 June 2016

Nicole Esther Lee

I would like to thank God for bringing all of us safely back home after this year’s church camp. This year’s camp theme, ‘Joy is My Inheritance’, was very meaningful to me, because in school people would think and say bad things disrespectfully about Christians. I had doubts and fears, but my sister and brother would often sing, ‘O rejoice in the Lord, He makes no mistake…’ This is truly a wonderful phrase that I would remind myself when someone tries to attack the Name of God...

Creationists amongst Evolutionists!

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 12 June 2016

We live in a world that is full of unbiblical philosophies and practices, which have pervaded and deeply influenced societal thinking and attitudes. Our firm convictions and commitment to holiness are often viewed with contempt, scorn and even hatred! Jesus, being aware of the hostility that we will face in the world, has prayed for us: “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:14-16).

Our faith in the truth of God’s Word will not only be tested and challenged, but will also be hated as well. Faithful Christians, be they adults, youths or children, all are facing many difficulties in society, schools and workplaces, simply because of their adherence to the doctrine of creation. The evolutionists would like to depict us as anti-scientific and irrational people...

Gethsemane Defenders’ Ministry (GDM)

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 05 June 2016

(The first of a two-part sequel to GDM’s inaugural seminar, “The Bible Above All Sciences”, in which the theory of evolution was refuted as unbiblical, and the biblical doctrine of God’s creation of all things in six days was defended. Written by Bro Samuel Gan & Pastor Koshy)

Bible-believing Christians face a lot of struggles in and challenges to their faith, with the biblical moral standard under relentless attack from the world today! The Bible teaches that things will not get better as regards to the spiritual and moral landscape of the world...

Looking Forward To The Church Camp!

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 29 May 2016

There has been much enthusiasm among our brethren about the upcoming church camp (to be held 6-10 June, 2016). If the Lord permits, 217 brethren will gather at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The camp committee, led by Dn Francis Lee (Camp Master) have made all the arrangements and will continue to labour to ensure a smooth running of the camp.

Even our children are excited about the church camp. During last Tuesday prayer meeting, as I sat with our young children to pray, I asked them whether they were looking forward to the church camp. Their enthusiastic reply of “Yes! Yes!” was very heartening, and we prayed together for the camp’s blessings...

Dangers of an Ungodly Relationship

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 22 May 2016

Have you been developing a close friendship with unregenerate people? Have you been ‘dating’ an unbeliever? Or have you been maintaining your relationship with a Christian in an unbiblical, worldly, carnal manner? Then, please consider the following warnings of God’s Word, and quickly deliver yourself from the displeasure of God and much heart-wrenching consequences in life.

Consider what an ungodly relationship brings upon you...

Jesus has said to His disciples, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:18-19).

Gethsemane Bible- Presbyterian Church has always been emulating her Saviour’s example and embracing His teaching, by constantly evangelising and reaching out to the lost souls, across all ages. On top of the demands of various ministries that our church has undertaken, Pastor Koshy’s burden has also been to reach out to the elderly with the Gospel message...

Our Freedom in Christ

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 08 May 2016

JJesus said, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). Here, Jesus first of all directs our attention to the fact that He is the “Son”. By using the title “Son”, He wanted to draw us to the fact that He is the undisputed Heir of all things, who wields the ultimate authority and power concerning all matters, even to free a man from his servitude. So in the preceding verse, He had said, “And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever” (John 8:35). As the only begotten Son of God, Christ enjoys unchallenged, eternal right to exercise the full authority vested in Him by the Father to liberate slaves...

Seniors’ Ministry 11th Thanksgiving Service

Written by Pr Jeremiah Sim Sunday, 01 May 2016

The Gethsemane Seniors’ Ministry exults in the Lord with praises of thanksgiving for His bestowal of His bountiful love and blessings for the past 11 years. We marked this anniversary occasion with a special thanksgiving held on 7 April 2016 at Aloha Loyang Resort. Praise God for giving us clear, beautiful weather on that blessed day! With joy overflowing from our hearts, we gathered to commemorate and recount the Lord’s abundant grace and mercy which we have witnessed and tasted in our lives.

The meeting proper began in the morning with the worship of God in singspiration, followed by a devotion message on “God’s Benefits to Christians” by Rev Tan Kian Sing...

Every Christian’s Duty

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 24 April 2016

In Romans 15:1-2, Paul records for us the duty which every Christian should know and be fully committed to – “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.”

Every Christian is called to be a member of the church, where he renders himself for the edification of other Christians. Paul has earlier stated this truth in Romans 12:5 – “So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” In 1 Corinthians 12:25, he further emphasises “that the members should have the same care one for another.” It is God’s design that we edify one another through mutual care...

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 17 April 2016

1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The Greek word which Paul uses for “temptation” (peirasmós) in the above verse can mean either a temptation of sin or a trial. Generally, temptation is an incentive or enticement or provocation to sin. When afflictions are brought upon us by Satan, he would also attempt to stir within us doubt, impatience and even apostasy. But as it was in the case of Job, God will use the trials and temptations brought by Satan to prove the faith and fervency of His children...

The Day of Worship

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 10 April 2016

GGod has instituted one day in the week for His worship by His people. In the Old Testament, it was the seventh day, and was known as the Sabbath day. In the New Testament, the day of worship has been the first day of the week; and it has been referred to as “the Lord’s day”.

In our time, Christians increasingly disregard the fact that God has set apart the Lord’s Day to be a time of public and private worship of God and also to rest in Him. I notice that even among the Bible-Presbyterians, some have no concern for the Lord’s expectation that His people spend this day in worship and service unto Him...

Voices of Gethsemane

Written by Pr Dennis Kabingue Sunday, 03 April 2016

Since time immemorial, God’s people have been singing unto the Lord as individuals, as a congregation and as a choir. While it is biblical to look at the ministry of preaching as the most important ministry in the church, looking down on the ministry of the church choir as though it is irrelevant in the church is downright unbiblical. When Martin Luther said, “Music is next to theology”, he was not suggesting that theology is the only thing that matters and that the church could serve God without music. Actually, what he was advocating is the opposite – music is to be in tandem with (though always guided by) sound theology...

Anniversary Greetings from Cebu

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 27 March 2016

Dear Pastor, the Church Session and our beloved brethren at Gethsemane B-P Church (Singapore),

Greetings in the Name of our risen Lord and Saviour!

On this happy occasion of commemorating our Lord’s resurrection, we also rejoice with you on your 28th Anniversary Thanksgiving. Praise God for His goodness all these years!...

Substitutionary Death of Christ

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Friday, 25 March 2016

Christ died on our behalf! He died on the cross, bearing the wrath of God against our sins. Christ had no sin of His own to suffer and die. He perfectly obeyed His Father and fulfilled all His laws. He was sinless. But God imputed our sins to Christ, that by His death, He might satisfy the demands of God’s justice. By bearing our punishment, He delivered us from enduring the eternal punishment in hell!

Because Christ willingly took our place to save us from God’s just wrath against our sins, His death is known as “substitutionary death...

Friday Morning Prayer Meeting

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 20 March 2016

Prayer has been the life-line of Gethsemane B-P Church. In addition to the congregational gathering on Tuesday nights to pray together after the Bible learning, many “prayer-bands” in our church meet to pray at other times of every week. One of such is held on Fridays at 7.30am in the Church Resource Centre. Though it is made up of a small group of prayer warriors, they have been interceding for the church for the past eight years. We share with you a testimony by one of its regular participants, Sis Diana Chan. May God raise up such prayer groups of our worshippers and members all around this island...

“Scripture in Song"

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 13 March 2016

Bible Witness Media Ministry has produced two volumes of “Scripture in Song” DVD, especially for the spiritual nurture of children. In both DVDs, we have children from our church singing all the songs. Today, I would like to share with all of you the story behind it and our purpose for its production.

Its Story

The idea of “Scripture in Song” first began as a family affair about two decades ago. My wife and I were making efforts to help our three young children memorise God’s Word...

Definition of Christian Fellowship

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 06 March 2016

The term “fellowship” has become a commonplace word not only in the church but also in the secular world, so much so that even casual meetings over some drinks have come to be known as “fellowship”. The modern world’s idea of “fellowship” has become so watered-down that it no longer carries the intended meaning as defined by Scripture.

The Greek word koinōnia is where we get our English word “fellowship”, as translated in our King James Bible in twelve instances. In other occurrences, it is rendered as “communion” (4 times), “communication” (once), “distribution” (once), “contribution” (once) and “to communicate” (once)...

Gethsemane Encouragers’ Ministry (GEM)

Written by Mah Chin Kwang Sunday, 28 February 2016

One of the most definitive passages in Scripture that set forth the importance of, the mandate for and the command for all believers to be encouragers is found in Paul’s second epistle to the Corinthians – “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Just to provoke us to internalise these thoughts, allow me to ask a pointed question...

Gethsemane Evangelism Outreach (GEO)

Written by Pr Andrew Koh Sunday, 21 February 2016

Before Jesus’ ascension to heaven, He gave His disciples the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18- 20 – “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

The Great Commission is given to the church to reach out to the unbelieving world. It is the duty of the believers to be witnesses for Christ by sharing the Gospel with people, welcoming them to the church and also teaching them to obey the commandments of God given in the Bible...

Gethsemane Children’s Ministry

Written by Kelvin Lim Sunday, 14 February 2016

Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14).

Gethsemane Children’s Ministry (GCM) was established with the dual purpose of meeting the spiritual needs of children within our church, and of reaching out to children outside the church. It seeks to educate believing children in the Word of God (Proverbs 22:6), and to evangelise unbelieving children with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ...

Blessed LUNAR New Year

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 07 February 2016

On every occasion of joy, whether it be a new year or anniversary or birthday, we must humble ourselves and give glory and honour to the LORD. God’s people must remember the Lord’s goodness and consider how to render their gratitude to Him. We have a good pattern in the humble reflection of the psalmist in Psalm 116 - “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people” (vv.12-14).

We must readily and enthusiastically ascribe glory to our God, saying, “Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness” (Psalm 65:11). It is the LORD who preserves us and keeps us alive (Psalm 41:2). It is because of His compassion that we are delivered from all our troubles (Psalm 34:6). In His mercy, He healed our sicknesses (Psalm 30:2-3). With the outpouring of His grace, He has strengthened our weak frame and made us triumphant (2 Corinthians 2:14; 12:9). So let us praise Him in our hearts, and also let us declare His truth to all around us....

Gethsemane Youth Fellowship

Written by Prabhudas Koshy & Andrew Koh Sunday, 31 January 2016

The objective of the Gethsemane Youth Fellowship (GYF) is to reach out to the young people of our church with biblical truths that will help them keep out worldliness in their lives (cf. 1 John 2:15a). Worldliness is like leaven that “leaveneth the whole lump” (1 Corinthians 5:6b). Worldliness pervades every aspect of life and society. Young people are especially vulnerable to its evil influences.

According to the Scriptures, youths can be strengthened to be overcomers of the world and its wicked prince, the devil, through the Word of God. 1 John 2:14b says, “I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you...

Gethsemane Young Adults’ Fellowship

Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Sunday, 24 January 2016

GYAF is a ministry specially organised to reach out to the young adults of Gethsemane B-P Church who are in the age range of about 23-35 years. The very first time a young adults’ group was formed in Gethsemane BPC was in 1996. A few years later, when the young adults went on to form the Adults’ Fellowship (GAF), the young adults’ ministry was discontinued. Nevertheless, with more young adults in Gethsemane by the year 2007, we re-established GYAF...
