Pastoral Exhortation - Series of 2010

Family Gospel Night

My beloved Gethsemaneans,

I can’t think of a greater joy that we can receive than the joy we experience when someone is saved by turning to Christ in faith. This joy reaches a greater height when it is one of our own family members or a close friend that turns to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

Many of us are praying for the salvation of our dearest and nearest. In Gethsemane B-P Church, we consider it to be our supreme honour and joy to co-labour with every member to preach the Gospel of salvation to his/her dear ones. So Gethsemane Evangelism Outreach is cocoordinating a Family Gospel Night on 20th March at 6 p.m. The event will start with a dinner. It is good to treat our dear ones to a decent dinner to show our love for them. Jesus gave us a pattern in this matter as He Himself showed tender care by providing food for those who came to hear Him preach (John 6:5-11; Matthew 14:14-21;15:32-38). Ten dollars for your dear one's dinner is a very small cost that you pay to bear testimony to the great price that Jesus Christ paid for man’s salvation (Psalm 49:7-8; 1 Timothy 2:6). Let us take advantage of this opportune time to testify Christ’s great redemption to our loved ones through our joyful participation in the Family Gospel Night.

It is the Lord’s work to save souls: but as a rule, He begins to work upon sinners by first of all arousing His own people. Will you not be a labourer for your Master for the harvest of souls? What you need to do first is to be in much prayer. In this, all the Lord’s people can join. Come for the Tuesday night prayer meeting to pray for the salvation of your dear ones. Let the members of Prayer Partners' Ministry get together to pray for the Family Gospel Night. If possible, meet with fellow brethren as often as you can to pray. If you really cannot join others, then pray on your own all the same. Without the Holy Spirit, we are nothing, and prayer alone can win His aid.

The next practical step is to make the meeting known. The people will not come to the meeting if they do not know of it. If every person will spread the news, we will have a very effective publicity, and it will be the largest scale publicity with very little outlay. If you cannot preach the Gospel, why not win a soul by letting it be known that the Gospel
is preached? The third needful work is to bring in the people. Persuade relatives, friends and neighbours to attend. Canvass all who are close to you. ‘Compel them to come in.’ When this is done, give a personal word. Speak for Jesus before and after the preacher declares the Gospel. Good sermons need following up by personal entreaties. God often
blesses feeble efforts; indeed, He suffers no true endeavour to fall to the ground.

I beseech you all, let us unite with all our strength, to be soul-winners. God will bless us.

Yours most heartily,

Pastor Koshy

God is so Good!

A thanksgiving testimony by Bro Kenneth Wong

Truly, the Lord has been very good to me in the past year, 2009. He has given me bountiful blessings that I have no lack. How can I keep silent or withhold my praise when God has blessed my family and me?

A month ago, the Lord rebuked me through brethren who gave their thanksgiving testimonies. For instance, Bro Kee How shared from Psalm 32:3, “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old.” A week later, Pastor wrote in his exhortation from Luke 19:40 that the Lord would cause the stones to cry out His praise. If I would not praise Him for His goodness toward my family, I think the chairs in the seminar room would, putting me
to shame!

God’s goodness to my mother

Last year was a year of many ups and downs for my mum. Her eldest sister became critically ill from cancer in February. While she was in the hospital, we went to visit her, wanting to share the Gospel with her. At her bedside, we learned that she had already accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour. One of my distant relatives who is a Christian, led her to Christ. Later, the same lady shared the Gospel with my mum and brother. Praise the Lord, they too understood the message of the Gospel and accepted Christ readily. My aunt passed away the following month and had a Christian funeral.

In the past, we have tried many times to witness to my mum but to no avail. It took my aunt’s sickness and my relative’s effort to awaken her. Not even her own serious illness that she suffered caused her to ponder on her salvation. So I was very doubtful whether my mum would ever believe on the Lord Jesus. So when I heard that she believed, I had to go to her to confirm her salvation. When I visited her at home, all the idols and altars in the house were gone. All the old altars of my ancestors and my father were all sent away to the temple. I was so overjoyed that my mum who had been praying to the idols for the more than 50 years with so much devotion could give them all up overnight. I was so full of joy and thanksgiving to God. What great joy it is for a Christian to see his mother coming to the Lord Jesus to be saved. She was baptised in July 2009, and she attends a Mandarin congregation with my brother in Kim Tian Christian Church.

I thank God for brethren who pleaded for her salvation week after week in our Tuesday Prayer Meeting. The Lord heard our earnest prayers. May we continue to pray for the salvation of our unbelieving loved ones.

Below is one of my favourite hymns that ministered and encouraged me as I waited on the Lord to see my mother’s conversion. This hymn continues to minister to me as I pray
for the salvation of my parents-in-law.

Does Jesus care when
I’ve said “goodbye”
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches
till it nearly breaks,
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?

Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary,
the long nights dreary,
I know my Saviour cares.

God’s goodness to my wife

Being a homemaker is a 24/7 job. Angeline has been a very caring wife and a loving mother of 3. She serves us with the diligence and the dedication of a maid. :) She is also a fierce matron and a meticulous manager. She plays so many different roles, yet overworked and unpaid! I tell her that she will have plenty of rewards in heaven!

Motherhood is truly a high calling. She hardly has any time for her own leisure. She understands the challenges of those who serve the Lord full-time, and thus never complains about my limited help at home. She is to me like "the Proverbs 31 woman"; but I know she would say that she is far from it. “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:11-12).

The burdens of life are many, and when I share with her, she would just say ‘Trust in the Lord’. It does not mean that I do not trust the Lord or have no faith in Him. Normally, I would like to look ahead and see how I can meet the needs of the family. So when I share those thoughts, she would encourage me to trust the Lord. On a few occasions last year, we were reduced to almost nothing. I would like to share how we survived: the Lord marvellously provided all things on time. On every one of those trying occasions, we had to wait almost to the last hour. Then the Lord would send me a gift to help me through a week or two. God taught me through hard lessons, and has showed me He cares for my family and me more than I can think or imagine. Through all these anxious moments, my wife never murmured. Neither did she ask for anything material. That relieved me of a lot of pressure. As Proverbs 19:14 says, “… a prudent wife is from the LORD.”

I praise God for provisions for all my  children’s needs such as education materials, food, clothing, etc. Many times I had wanted to praise God, but I refrained because of my pride and ego. Now I must praise and glorif Him for being my Jehovah Jireh.

There are many more things to thank God for. The words of one of our beautiful songs which exalts God’s love expresses my feelings at this moment:

Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies
of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Please continue to pray for me and my family that we would ‘walk worthy of the Lord’.
